Governor Eliot Spitzer has called for a special election on May 22 to fill the state Assembly seat left vacant by the new DEC head Pete Grannis. Grannis had sponsored numerous animal protection bills in the Assembly and earned LOHV-NYC's endorsement in 2006. He had held the Upper East Side Assembly seat since 1974.In February, LOHV-NYC endorsed Micah Kellner, a Democrat, to succeed Grannis in the 65th Assembly district. Said Kellner: "Assemblymember Pete Grannis was true leader when it came to animal rights in New York State and I am humbled that the League of Humane Voters of New York City has the confidence in me to succeed him. I look forward to working with LOHV-NYC to project and enhance the rights of animals."
Among the issues Kellner supports: a ban on the production of foie gras, a ban on canned shoots, funding for humane education and a statewide ban on wild/exotic use in circuses. Click here to read his candidate questionnaire and find out more about his position on the issues.
If you live on the Upper East Side, in Yorkville or on Roosevelt Island, please vote on May 22nd for humane candidate Micah Kellner!
Update: The Special Election has been postponed from May 22 to June 5th!
