Eugene throws in the towel

Council Member-Elect Dr. Mathieu Eugene stopped short of admitting today that he didn't meet residency requirements to hold office -- but he still wants the Mayor to call for another special election. (Eugene defeated humane candidate Zenobia McNally and 8 others in the February 20th special election.) Said Bloomberg spokesman John Gallagher: "Once the Mayor receives written correspondence from Mr. Eugene confirming that he is not taking the seat he is certified for, he will call a special election."

3/10/07 Update: Another special election will be held in the 40th Council District on April 24th. It will cost taxpayers at least $350,000. The February 20th special election cost taxpayers $451,224, and that figure isn't even final yet. LOHV-NYC will decide in the coming weeks whether or not to make an endorsement in this next special. Stay tuned.
