Eugene wins Brooklyn Council seat

Dr. Mathieu Eugene (pictured on the left) won the Brooklyn City Council seat in yesterday's special election, becoming the first Haitian-born member of the body. Eugene received 34% of the vote, defeating nine other candidates, including LOHV-NYC endorsed candidate Zenobia McNally. Voter turnout was very low, with 5,890 people making it to the polls.

LOHV-NYC congratulates Dr. Eugene on his historic victory. Unfortunately, Eugene was the only candidate who did not interview with us or respond to our candidate questionnaire. We don't know yet where he stands on animal issues.

The other City Council special election yesterday was in Staten Island, where Vincent Ignizio (pictured on the right) won the seat vacated by Andrew Lanza after his election to the State Senate.
