Quinn won't support bill to protect wild animals

Speaker Christine Quinn has revealed that she "cannot support nor lend [her] name" to Council Member Rosie Mendez's bill which would ban the use of elephants and other wild animals in performances, Intro. 389

In a letter to one of our members, Quinn says that she believes the legislation is "overly broad" and would "essentially ban all circuses from the city (as well as carnivals, parades, trade shows and other such venues)". Of course, there are many circuses that do not use wild animals, including Cirque du Soleil. Further, no trade show or carnival should be using wild/exotic animals!

Interestingly, even though she has rarely supported animal protection legislation, Speaker Quinn also says she is a "staunch advocate for animal rights."

Read Speaker Quinn's entire letter here. More information on Council Member Mendez's bill can be found here.

Zelda Penzel:

re Quinn being " a staunch advocate for animal rights." NOT!!! Her record speaks for itself! I think Speaker Quinn has no idea what advocating for "animal rights" means.

MItchell:

Animal rights and Human rights are connected! It should be on the same tree. Too bad Christine Quinn does'nt see that. What a terrible person.
