Primary 2006 a winning night for animals

Brian Kavanagh, our endorsed candidate in Manhattan's 74th Assembly District, defeated incumbent Assemblywoman Sylvia Friedman in last night's Democratic primary by 374 votes! This was a tremendously important primary for LOHV-NYC and for animals. We sent a very strong message to the political establishment: we care about animals and we vote! As we reported on September 1st, Sylvia Friedman had recently received a $350 check from the owners of Ringling Bros. and Barnum Bailey Circus, according to paperwork filed with the Board of Elections.

This seminal victory for animals was made possible by your support. Dozens of LOHV-NYC volunteers contributed hundreds of hours of work to Brian's campaign. We knocked on hundreds of doors and made thousands of phone calls; we contacted countless humane voters through mailings, advertising and phone calls. We made the difference.

Our other victory last night was in the State Senate's 25th District, which includes parts of Brooklyn and Manhattan. State Senator Martin Connor handily defeated a challenge by Ken Diamondstone, a wealthy landlord who poured hundreds of thousands of dollars of his own money into his campaign. Connor, who has voted consistently for humane legislation for years, won by 2069 votes.
